DSG Helps With Donation of Dental Equipment to Honduras
In the beginning....
Steve Howard's friend and fellow Honduras traveler, Don David from the Albany Rotary club, asked him whether the Salud Total clinic in La Ceiba could use any dental equipment because he had just found some that could be donated. (Don knew there was need, because there was no proper dental lamp when he got his teeth cleaned there in February!)
Steve called Salud Total and they gave him a list of things they could really use to help provide better quality care to those visiting this free-clinic every week. He got what he could from the donor-clinic Don found in Portland, and then found more pieces through Steve Stocks in the Albany club. According to Steve, "It is INCREDIBLY rewarding to know you’re making a difference in the lives of so many!!!"
He applied for a $1000 District Simplified Grant for the purpose of shipping the donated equipment to the clinic. The money finally came through this month, so a shipper was arranged through an online reverse-auction service for trucking, the pallets full of equipment were carefully packed, and Steve is getting ready to send them out.
One of the pallets still has a bit of space, so if you have things you think might be good for children and others in need, please bring them on Wednesdays (especially anything medically related). In particular, they can use a simple machine for sealing plastic bags (they use plastic bags instead of bottles for giving out prescriptions). Some cordless phones would be very helpful, and of course all sizes of warm-weather clothing are welcomed (especially work clothes and dress or semi-dress clothes… not so much on the bummin’ / sloppy clothes).
